The Maitland Mercury - the oldest surviving New South Wales provincial newspaper - began publication as a weekly newspaper on 7 January 1843,  and was not just a "local paper" but carried reports from all over Australia, featuring news from many parts of the colony from Fremantle, to Hobart, to Moreton Bay, with correspondents scattered right across the country.

These indexes will save historians and students many hours of searching for the item that may assist in their research, and it will tell them, also, when searching is futile.

In 1846 the Maitland Mercury altered it's layout from the once weekly, four page, five column format, to a twice weekly, four page, six column format, and features passenger lists to shipping arrivals and departures in Sydney and other ports. This will greatly assist those researchers who have been searching for information on unassisted shipping passengers who were in the category of "swam here".

This newspaper is available on micro film for viewing by researchers at some libraries, such as The State Library of NSW in Sydney  and also at some historical and family history societies. Or copies of newspaper extracts are also available at a nominal fee of $5 from Rod & Wendy Gow.
