In January, 1900, Bubonic Plague came to Australia in epidemic proportions.
The population were well aware of the history of the "Black Death". In the 14th. century, plague is estimated to have killed 200 million people in Asia and Europe - one third of the total population. In 1855 a pandemic began in China killing 12 million in China and India alone.
In late 1899 and early 1900 plague was rampant in Calcutta and thousands were affected with hundreds dying each week. Many thought it inevitable that plague would be carried aboard trading vessels to Australia - and they were proved correct.
The first case was reported from Adelaide, and with transportation supplied
by unaware international and colonial shipping, the host rats with their
infected fleas soon spread the disease throughout the colony. Cases were
reported from almost every state with Queensland suffering badly. The Sydney
epidemic commenced in January and lasted until July. In those seven months
the population thirsted for news of how this terrifying disease was to
affect their day to day life. The very word Plague incited fear and intrepidation
amongst the population.
Extracts :
Dateline - Tuesday, 20 March, 1900
A youth named Henry O'Connell was discovered yesterday at Redfern suffering
from bubonic plague. An hour after the complaint had been definitely diagnosed
to be plague the patient died. The body was taken to the Quarantine Station
for burial. A case of bubonic plague was last night reported to the health
authorities from Randwick. A woman residing in the city was also found
to be suffering from the plague. The name of the patient removed from Randwick
this morning is Vincent Heaton. The house where he lived in Allison Road
has been isolated, and the inmates, numbering six, removed to the Quarantine
Ground. The two latter were servants. Heaton is reported to be very ill,
it is stated he is the only one in the family who had not been inoculated.
He was engaged in a large produce business in Sussex-street.
Dateline - Wednesday, 21 March, 1900
At 8:30 this morning there were fully one thousand persons surrounding
the offices of the Board of Health at the corner of Macquarie-street and
Albert-street, near the entrance of Government House grounds. A foolish
panic, of exaggerated fear and alarm, had evidently set in. The persons
in attendance were rushing the premises for the purpose of being inoculated.
Mr. Clarence Simms, Secretary of the Board, telephoned for police assistance
in order to crush the disturbance which he foresaw would ensue, and which
might be regulated as far as possible. When the gates were opened a large
number of persons were admitted, these at once rushed the stairway which
in a few seconds was packed with a dense struggling mass of humanity, each
pushing and surging in the effort to get one step higher. In the crush
several women fainted, and had to be borne away. Up to 11 o'clock about
300 persons had been inoculated.
Dateline - Thursday, 26 April, 1900
Yesterday's total plague cases numbered five, with two deaths, but
both the latter were persons who were dead before they were seen by the
medical inspecting staff. The cause of death was therefore ascertained
by post mortem examinations. The names of the two dead patients are - Henry
Branch, a child aged 5 years, who lived with his parents at Paddington.
Timothy Maher, who lived in the city. The other patients were Frederick
Morris residing in the city, Frederick Bassman residing at Waverley, and
Ellie George residing at Guildford.
Dateline - Friday, 27 April, 1900
Three additional cases of plague were reported yesterday, the patients
being - W. Jones, age 22, resident of Surry Hills, employed as a clerk
in a city warehouse - 11 contacts. Florence Young, age 12, living in Balmain,
had been attending a public school - 7 contacts. Foo Chong, age 52, a Chinese,
who lived and worked at a city fruit shop kept by fellow countrymen - 6
contacts. This case was reported from the Sydney Hospital. According to
Dr. Salter's report, received last night, Rose, McKinley, Linklater, and
Morris had somewhat improved, Munn remained critical, Frederick Basman
was slightly delirious, and Ellie George was weak, but had no delirium.
The Rev. G. D. Buchanan, of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Goulburn,
has offered his services as chaplain at the Quarantine Station. John Joseph
Smith, age 30, residing in Dowling-street, Paddington, and employed in
Kent-street, was this afternoon reported as being suffering from plague.
This brings the total number of cases up to 150.
Dateline - Saturday, 28 April, 1900
The man, Brabasen or Dreveson, in Brisbane, who has been removed to
Cairncross Quarantine Station suffering from the plague, is 21 years of
age. He has only been married three months, and was employed as a carter
by a firm of produce merchants. His work took him on one of the wharves
and into the markets, but it is generally believed that he contracted the
disease at the waterside. He has been sick some days. There were six contacts
removed to quarantine with him. It is stated that both from a clinical
and a bacteriological examination the case is one of actual plague, and
it is feared to be a bad case. The contacts comprise the patient's wife,
father and mother, two brothers and a sister. A bulletin last night from
Cairncross states that it is expected that the patient will recover.
Some sensation has been caused in the city of Brisbane by the announcement
of the discovery two days ago of a dead rat under the floor of the Kangaroo
Point State School, which is situated in the midst of a populous neighbourhood.
The municipal authorities are cleansing thoroughly, and the school has
been closed in the meanwhile.
Dateline - Wednesday, 2 May, 1900
Intense excitement was created last night by the rumour that a case
of bubonic plague had been discovered at Coolgardie. The rumour proved
to be correct, the victim being Willie Green, age 4 years, the son of Constable
Green, who was transferred there from Bunbury in the early part of last
month. On Monday, Dr. Ellis, the health officer, was called in to visit
the child. He observed a slight swelling in the groin, and on visiting
again this morning, the swelling had increased. Dr. Ellis called in Dr.
Swanston, and both regarded the case as highly suspicious. Dr. Reid, of
Boulder, who has had considerable experience of bubonic plague in India,
was telephone for, and on his arrival a careful diagnosis was made, and
the case pronounced to be undoubtedly plague.
Dateline - Monday, 2 July, 1900
A young man named O'Doherty, lately from Townsville, was taken ill
in Brisbane on Friday and removed to the hospital. His symptoms were suspicious,
and the patient was isolated. Dr. Bancroft declared it to be a case of
true plague. The sufferer was removed to quarantine. A woman named Roach,
a widow, aged 52, residing in Bowen-street, was discovered to be suffering
from plague on Saturday, and was removed to quarantine - 8 contacts.
